Plaque builds up on your teeth every day — a bacterial film that gradually hardens under the influence of food and saliva. Where a brush and floss cannot reach, it turns into tartar. And tartar can no longer be removed with home tools: it bonds firmly to the tooth surface and below the gum line.
What is professional hygiene?
Professional hygiene is a comprehensive procedure performed by a hygienist with special equipment. It involves several steps:
- Ultrasonic cleaning — gently removes tartar both above and below the gum line.
- AirFlow — a fine jet of air, water and soft powder washes away pigmented plaque (from coffee, tea, cigarettes) even from the hardest-to-reach places.
- Polishing — after cleaning, the tooth surface becomes smooth, so new plaque sticks to it more slowly.
- Fluoridation — strengthens the enamel and reduces sensitivity.
This is not a cosmetic ritual. It is prevention that protects you from far more serious and expensive problems in the future.
Why isn’t home brushing enough?
Even if you brush twice a day and use floss, removing nearly 100% of plaque from the spaces between teeth and the gum pockets is impossible. These are exactly the places where problems most often begin — problems a person doesn’t notice for a long time because they don’t hurt.
What happens if you keep postponing it?
Accumulated tartar becomes a home for bacteria. Over time this leads to:
- gum inflammation (gingivitis) — gums swell and bleed during brushing;
- periodontitis — the inflammation affects the tooth’s supporting structures, and the gums begin to recede;
- bad breath and changes in enamel colour;
- in the long term — loose teeth and even tooth loss.
Important: in the early stages these processes are reversible. Regular hygiene is the simplest way to stop them before serious treatment is needed.
Is it painful, and how long does it take?
Modern methods are gentle. Most patients describe the procedure as slightly unpleasant but not painful. If your teeth are sensitive, we use local anaesthesia or special pastes that reduce sensitivity. On average, a visit lasts 45 to 60 minutes.
How often should it be done?
For most people it is optimal to have professional hygiene once every 6 months. For those who wear braces, smoke or are at risk of gum disease, the doctor may recommend a more frequent schedule. The exact interval is determined individually after the first visit.
