Caries treatment and dental fillings in Riga
Caries treatment
Caries treatment depends on the stage of the damage. If caries is detected early and has affected only the outer layer of the tooth, it can often be stopped with thorough brushing and fluoride-containing care products. If the damage has progressed and a cavity has formed, the tooth is restored with a filling, during which the damaged part of the tooth is filled with a special filling material. However, if caries has reached the tooth nerve, root canal (endodontic) treatment is needed to eliminate the inflammation and preserve the tooth.
Caries and its causes
Tooth damage most often develops in places where plaque accumulates — on interdental surfaces, in the grooves and pits of the chewing surfaces, and in areas near the gums. Plaque is a mixture of chewed food, saliva and microorganisms. During eating, the environment in the mouth turns from alkaline to acidic; under the influence of acids, microorganisms act on food debris, the tooth enamel begins to break down, and cavities form.

Frequently asked questions
-
What to do when caries has damaged more than 50% of the tooth?
In cases where a tooth has lost more than 50% of its tissues, or has lost contact with an adjacent tooth through its own tissues, we recommend the use of dental onlays or crowns. Dental onley is a laboratory-made ceramic filling that is stronger than composite material and does not shrink as a result of polymerization, which is a common cause of tooth fractures, see Aesthetic Dentistry or Prosthetics for more details.
-
What material is commonly used for a filling?
The filling material is used individually in each clinical situation, the widely used material for coating tooth surfaces is composite.
-
What rules to follow after the procedure?
After filling the tooth, it is not recommended to eat for about 2 hours while the anesthesia is in effect. A preventive visit to the dentist should be done regularly once a year, but if the caries was deep and there is a risk of nerve damage, we recommend that you undergo a dental health check once every six months.

How to determine the stage of caries?
The initial degree of caries: the hard surface of the tooth is affected - often the patient has no complaints, but if treatment is not started in a timely manner, this can lead to the serious tooth damage. In order to detect and prevent the development of caries in time, it is necessary to visit the dentist regularly. Medium degree of caries: tooth enamel is destroyed - the patient experiences severe pain and sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet or salty foods. Deep degree of caries: infection reaches the dental nerve - if the tooth is not treated in a timely manner, caries penetrates into the layer of the jawbone under the hard tooth root (complicated caries). It is at this stage that acute pain can sease, and caries becomes chronic. In such a situation, it is necessary to carry out endodontics (cleaning the tooth canal).
