There is a myth that orthodontic repair and treatment damage the teeth. This is misleading because the orthodontic appliance itself does not cause teeth damage. However, it should be remembered that plaque forms around braces, attachments and other appliancies in the oral cavity during their use. If not properly and regularly cleaned, it damages enamel and gums and causes permanent tooth damage. Plaque contains many bacteria that produce acids, and these acids destroy the outer surface of the tooth (enamel). Since bacteria produce acid from carbohydrates, it is advisable to reduce the amount and frequency of consuming sugar, sweets, and carbonated, sweet and sour drinks during orthodontic treatment.
Poor oral hygiene during dental anjustment causes inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), which can develop into more severe gum and bone destruction (periodontitis) and lead to an unfavourable outcome of the orthodontic treatment.
